25 years of training excellence.
DEFINITIONS began, humbly enough, in a dorm room at Columbia College here in New York. The brainchild of a bodybuilder (Garry Steinhart) a math major (Joe Barron), DEFINITIONS was inspired by a suggestion that the two teach other students how to work out properly. An ad in the Village Voice an much word-of-mouth later, the essential concept of DEFINITIONS was born: personal training with regular intensity in a private space.
In 1983, when personal training was only associated with the rich and famous, Garry and Joe opened their first DEFINITIONS location in the Flatiron district. The exercise entrepreneurs wanted to take their concept to anyone looking to invest their time and energy toward physical and mental well being. Within two short years, DEFINITIONS had outgrown its original space and relocated, not only establishing itself as a personal training industry pioneer, but also as the industry standard.
Although there have been many improvements since 1983, DEFINITIONS remains profoundly personal. We still hire the best people. We still run spotless, comfortable and well-designed gyms. We still cater to a demanding, sophisticated clientele who thrive on personal service and continually reward us with their dedication and loyalty. And we still remain passionate about what we do.
